[12.21] The Basketball Player held at NAIA for using Fake PH Passport

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) said agents at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) arrested a professional basketball player who tried to enter the country with a counterfeit Philippine passport.

Immigration Commissioner "Norman Tansingco," said in a statement that the passenger, identified as 36-year-old "Avery Roberto Scharer," was arrested shortly after arriving at the airport on Thursday at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1. “Scharer” had just arrived on a Philippine Airlines flight from Canada and presented his American and Filipino passports to the immigration staff upon immigration.

However, The BI officers found major discrepancies and irregularities in Philippine passports and, after submitting travel documents to the responsible supervisor, approved the same to the country's forensic documentation laboratory for investigation.

He is known to have posted on social media that he was wrongfully detained by immigration officials upon his arrival at NAIA.

“Our forensic equipment confirmed the suspicion of our officers,” said Tansingco. “The Philippine passport he presented contained 

 tampered pages, including the biographical data page.

His attempts to hide these shifts cannot avoid investigation by our inspectors. Despite the violations, we further clarify that posting false information on social media to gain empathy is undesirable. There are no sacred cows, as foreigners who violate immigration laws and submit forged documents will be arrested. ' he added.

Scharer was later turned over to the BI Legal Department for investigation into alleged violations of Philippine passport laws and alleged use of fake immigration documents. He will remain in the BI detention center in Taguig Bicutan until his case is resolved.

Scharer has been collected to have played in various college, amateur and professional basketball leagues in America and Asia. In 2015, Scherer was drafted 5th overall by Wang's Basketball Couriers of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) D-League.
