[10.26] A magnitude 6.4 earthquake hits Abra, generating 368 aftershocks.

MANILA – A magnitude 6.4 tectonic earthquake jolted Abra Tuesday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The quake struck about 9 km. northwest of Cagayan at 10:59 p.m. It was 11 km. deep.

Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the strength based on reports of people who felt an earthquake, and instrument strength is measured using strength gauges that measure ground acceleration.

Phivolcs said both aftershocks and damage from the earthquake are expected.

The quake had generated 368 aftershocks as of 6 a.m. Wednesday. Of these, at least 46 were plotted or placed and 4 were detected.

The aftershocks ranged from magnitude 1.4 to 4.

Classes and work suspension

Abra Governor "Dominic Valera" has canceled all public and private school classes and those who work in government offices on Wednesday.

"Valera," said in the advisory issued at 2 a.m. that the personnel  will investigate and assess damage from the earthquake.

He reminded the public to be alert but remain calm. (PNA)
