[10.21] Airport authorities preparing for holidays

Manila - Airport authorities are currently preparing for an influx of holiday passengers.

"Maria Elben Moro," deputy director of the Civil Aeronautics Board, urged travelers on Friday to take safety precautions and buy tickets early.

"We would like to remind you to take precautions as (coronavirus disease) is still present, so please continue to follow health and safety protocols," she said at a public briefing.

"Moro" also advised them to buy their tickets early so they had more options and cheaper prices available

According to the Manila International Airports Authority (MIAA), the total number of monthly passengers passing through Manila's main gateway in August reached nearly 3 million, which is 77% of pre-pandemic levels.

According to MIAA, domestic traffic at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) so far has reached 109% (1.94 million passengers) compared to the same period in 2019.

Meanwhile, international passenger traffic remained at 1.06 million, more than 50% of the Pre-Pandemic level.

MIAA said the increase in passengers is due to the government's vaccination program, which boosts air traveler confidence.

To prepare for upcoming holidays, discussions were held among MIAA management, airlines, and other aviation stakeholders to ensure efficient flight processing by ensuring the proper deployment of equipment and personnel.

Managers of all NAIA terminals have been instructed to ensure critical facilities are in good condition and to implement emergency measures as necessary.

Operations and security groups have been instructed to continuously patrol the airport grounds to prevent congestion and queuing in critical areas. They were also instructed to step up patrols to prevent petty crime. Perimeter patrols will also be strengthened.

The engineering team was tasked with ensuring that all critical infrastructure and equipment were available and backup systems are ready to be deployed.
